Lake Superior Views

Duluth Award Winning Project

The multipurpose functionality requested by our client while achieving a two-in-one study and theater made this project very unique for our company, add to that the fact that this room sits looking over a cliff on Lake Superior and we think you have a pretty special room. The obstacles that we had to overcome in room design, out of town location, and extreme ambient light while satisfying our client's specific requests was only made possible by our dedicated staff.

Our client’s objectives were plain and simple, create an eye-opening and jaw-dropping Home Theater while still maintaining the existing study where aesthetics was just as important as audio and video performance. Oh yes, one last item, the room has multiple windows with views of Lake Superior and one window has a 180-degree view. We will need to control the light for movies while maintaining the beautiful view when using the study. Combing a dedicated theater with an existing study was no easy task. The room was long and narrow with a significant change in height. We needed some diffusion for the room and one of the easiest ways to create this is with a bookshelf. We also wanted to create a more defined separation between the study and theater, so another bookcase was created but this time just knee-high to give the effect without blocking the beautiful Lake Superior view. The remaining side and rear walls were covered with a combination of wainscoting for reflection and acoustical stretch material above for absorption.
