High Tech Meets High Design in This Home’s Showstopping Hearth

Stunning home features that look effortless are often due to being effort filled. At Lance Anderson’s home on Prior Lake, a stone accent wall that features a 100-inch TV and 100-inch gas fireplace, flanked by seven-foot speakers, was no exception. The founder of Admit One Home Systems is admittedly a technology enthusiast, so developing an “off the hook” gathering space for his family home was always top of mind. “The trick is how do we make all these pieces come together to look and feel intentional?” says Anderson, who worked with Mikan Custom Homes, Murphy & Co. Design and Stellar by Heat & Glo to put shape to his vision.

Natural materials were paramount from the beginning of the project, grounding the 4,700-square-foot home in mountain-modern architecture. A curated palette of wood, blackened steel and stone root the home right on the lake’s edge, where large expanses of glass provide panoramic views of the water. “It was our way of bringing the outdoors inside,” notes builder Mike Youngs. Water artfully trickles from an indoor waterfall, greeting guests as they ascend the staircase to the great room, where all the elements are at play with a special emphasis on fire. “It’s a challenge as you go more modern because it doesn’t always make sense stylistically to have a traditional fireplace, which is what makes the linear Enlight fireplace a great solution,” adds Dan Demeules, partner and lead designer at Murphy & Co. Design.

The custom 100-inch fireplace was designed to fit perfectly into the Orijin stone wall, which travels from the front exterior all the way through the house and back out to the deck. Its back-lit, blackened steel surround features custom-cut openings so the team could bring the finishing materials all the way to the firebox. It was important to Anderson that the television and fireplace were on the same plane; a feature that’s easier said than done — unless you partner with Stellar. “They were the only solution for this project,” adds Anderson. The Minnesota-based team came up with a cantilevered design to match the fireplace depth to the TV. “Very few fireplace manufacturers are able to do it,” says Ross Morrison of Stellar. The design requires a different sense of airflow and exhaust to make sure everything stays cool and still looks beautiful. It’s this type of industry-leading engineering and heat management that allows the TV and speakers to function safely just mere inches away from the fireplace. “I wanted to do things I’d never seen done before,” says Anderson, reveling in a combination of technology and style he didn’t even know was possible.
